    2. Let kids first read all the words out loud and talk through the rules.

The words are hidden horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in all directions.

    There are 15 words hidden:

    • SCHOOL
    • TEACHER
    • FRIENDS
    • CRAYONS
    • LEARN
    • LETTER
    • PENCIL
    • NUMBER
    • BOOKS
    • STUDY
    • CLASS
    • LUNCH
    • GLUE
    • READ
    • BUS

    3. You can let the kids solve the word search at their own pace or set a timer to see how many words they can find and who finds most of them.

It’s best suited for kids ages 6–10 (roughly grades 1–4). Younger kids in this range will need more time, while older ones might enjoy the timer challenge. It’s a bit advanced for kindergartners who are still learning to read.

Really simple activity with no-prep and no expensive supplies.

Why Word Searches Are Great for Kids

Word searches aren’t just a fun time-filler, they’re actually doing a lot of good things for your child’s developing brain at the same time.

Building reading and spelling skills. Scanning for hidden words forces kids to slow down and look carefully at letter patterns, which reinforces how words are spelled and what they look like on the page. Visual recognition is a foundational reading skill.

Improving focus and concentration. Finding hidden words in a grid of letters requires sustained attention. For kids who struggle to sit still, and in our age of screens, a word search gives their brain a clear goal to chase, which makes it much easier to stay on task.

Developing visual processing skills. Searching left to right, top to bottom, and diagonally trains the eyes and brain to work together in ways that directly support early literacy, plus, the challenge is that words can be in all directions, so it is not that obvious or “automatic”.

Word searches are also simple activities that boost confidence and create quick “success” situation which can be important for kids in both classroom setting and at home.
