Making DIY paint for kids’ play with pantry staples? Easy! This puffy foam paint is great for coloring sidewalks, drawing letters, numbers, names, or anything really on concrete and stone, and it washes off super easy!

You can make it at home with young kids in about 5-10 minutes and have a whole day of play outside while summer and warm fall still last!
This painting activity is amazing for kids aged 2 to 6 but I am sure older kids will have fun with it, too. The best feature for parents is, of course, that this DIY paint is completely washable, kids safe, and cheap to make.
Puffy Sidewalk Foam Paint Recipe
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120 g)
- ½ cup water (120 ml)
- 1 tbsp clear dish soap (it HAS to be clear one, I would go for no fragrance one too)
- Food coloring (whichever colors you like, I have red, yellow, blue, and green)

Equipment
- Squeeze bottles
- Mixing bowl and bowls for individual colors
- Spoon or whisk
- Funnel (optional)
Instructions
1. Add flour and water to a bowl and whisk until mostly smooth.

2. Stir in dish soap

3. Divide mixture into separate bowls

4. Add food colouring to each colour section and mix gently.
If you want to have some white paint, you can skip adding the coloring and pour it directly into the bottle (step 5), but it won’t be a perfect white (for that, add white coloring).

5. Pour into squeeze bottles.

6. Squeeze onto dry pavement or concrete to create colourful puffy drawings and shapes.

Storage
Foam paint is best used immediately after mixing for the puffiest texture.

If needed, store it in an airtight container for up to 24 hours, but some of the foam may disappear over time.
Stir gently before use. Discard any leftovers after a day.
FAQ
Why is my foam paint too thick?

Can I use different colours?
Yes! Divide the mixture into separate bowls and add different food colourings to each.
Can I use this indoors?
This activity is designed for outdoor use on pavement or concrete, as it can be messy!
Will it wash away?
Yes, the paint washes away with hot water or rainfall.
