If you want a brilliant early development activity for your toddler or preschooler during the holiday madness, this 4th of July sensory bin with red, white, and blue stars is exactly what you need.
Cheap for you (only 3 items needed) and fun for young kids to dig though and explore textures, colors, and materials, while keeping them from being overwhelmed and overstimulated.

So if you are still looking for a simple and sensory activity for the summer, give this Dollar Tree Independence day bin a try.
Supplies You Will Need
- Tray (I used blue color to stay within the patriotic theme, but you can use any other color or tray you have)
- Red, white, and blue glitter foam scatter stars. Foam stars are best as they are not flat, but 3D.
- brown basket filler from Dollar Tree or similar. This one also has red, white, and blue option for extra patriotic touch 🙂
- optional, jumbo tweezer for sensory bins.

How To Build 4th Of July Sensory Bin
Wipe clean the tray and make sure it is dry so the basket filler doesn’t get soggy.
Fill the tray first with brown basket filler so the bottom of the basket is not peeping through.

Using tweezer or hands, place the stars around the tray: red, white, and blue stars have nice texture, glitter, and they are different in size.

What Age Is This Activity For?
This sensory bin activity is best for kids aged 2 to 6 years old, preschoolers and toddlers love different textures and touching everything.
It is also a great Montessori activity to encourage fine motor skills and overall strength of little hands, sensory regulation, cognitive development, and will be great for the big holiday.
Plus, if your young child has trouble getting settled, sensory bins have a somewhat calming effect, consuming kids’ attention with different objects.

How To Make It More Fun & Educational
Set up backet filler, tray, and stars for kids on the floor to lay and explore themselves and talk about colors.

Why the stars are red, white, and blue? Explain (or even show) a picture of American flag and help kids identify the colors, count the stars, or sort them by color and size.
This activity is even better in social setting, for big families or daycare classroom where sensory bins can teach little ones how to cooperate and just be a fun, social activity to boost their moods.
Benefits Of Sensory Bins For 2-6 Year Olds
Multiple researches and educators have confirmed that sensory bins are one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to support young kids’ development any parent can do.
A sensory activity at home or in school:
- Builds nerve connections in the brain, laying the foundation for more complex learning tasks
- Strengthens fine motor skills like hand strength, bilateral coordination, and precision grip
- Supports cognitive development including problem-solving, memory, and creative thinking
- Boosts language development as kids describe textures, colors, and what they are doing
- Helps children regulate emotions and calm down in overstimulating situations
- Reduces behavioral problems by teaching self-regulation through hands-on play
- Builds focus and the ability to block out distractions
- Encourages early math skills through natural sorting, counting, and comparing
- Develops creativity and independent thinking through open-ended, child-led play
- Teaches social skills like turn-taking and cooperation in group settings
- Supports children with ADHD, anxiety, and sensory processing challenges by offering controlled sensory input
