There’s something special about painting turtles. Maybe it’s because they’re so cute or because they’re such a unique subject to paint. Whatever the reason, an easy turtle painting can be a fun and easy activity that anyone can enjoy, but firstly let’s learn how to paint sea turtles (without becoming a Picasso)

Turtles are easy to paint because their shell has a unique shape that can be easily broken down into smaller sections.
To paint a turtle, start by sketching the basic outline of the turtle’s body and head. Once you have your sketch, you can add details like spots or stripes on the turtle’s shell and scales around its neck. You might also want to add some definition to the eyes and draw a small nose.
Once you’re happy with your sketch, it’s time to add color. Use nice bright acrylic paints that will bring your turtle painting to life. Start by painting the shell and then move on to other details, such as spots, stripes, or scales.
How to Paint Sea Turtle with Acrylic Paint (My tutorial)

This easy sea turtle painting tutorial covers all steps and you only need a black marker, acrylic paint, paper (or canvas), a pencil, a flat brush, and a small round brush.
Total Time: 25 minutes
Step 1 – Sketch the turtle

Sketching the turtle starts with drawing the body. It roughly reminds a fat triangle with soft edges.
Next, add a small head, the shape also reminds a soft triangle.
Then, add flippers:
– Front flippers start with a long arch and then you should draw the bottom part like a little paddle. Forelimbs remind wings a little bit.
– Back flippers have a few “toes”.
Lastly, add a little triangle tail 🙂
Note: I wanted to throw away a swipe pouring that didn’t go as planned, but then I decided to make it as a background for my turtle! I think it looks amazing, but you can definitely draw a turtle on paper or canvas, no problem.
Step 2 – Draw the carapace

To sketch the carapace, first, draw the second line to make it like a carapace frame.
Start from the middle section. Each small section has 6 corners, it is a simple hexagon.
Skip a little space from the top of the carapace and draw the first hexagon. Continue the column of these hexagons down to the tail.
Then simply connect hexagon corners with the “frame”. Done!
Step 3 – Paint the limbs

Choose your palette. I have dark green-blue, ultramarine, black (marker), and white. And it will be enough for my sea turtle. I can adjust the colors by mixing them.
First, start with ultramarine mixed with a touch of green-blue as a base color for the whole turtle. Paint it all.
Step 4 – Paint the carapace

For the carapace, I chose dark green-blue as my turtle is underwater. You can mix in a bit of brown to make it look more like a shell.
I added ultramarine around the edges to make the turtle pop out from the background.
Step 5 – Add dark spots on limbs

Sea turtles have darker spots on the flippers and head. I’m using the same gree-blue color as for the carapace to make such spots.
Step 6 – Draw the bubbles

My turtle is under the sea so I’m adding a few bubbles. The principle of painting a bubble is quite the same as painting raindrops.
Step 7 – Highlights

Adding highlights with white to the bubbles, eyes, and spots on the carapace and limbs.
Step 8 – Add surroundings

It can be algae, fish, rocks, or other turtles in the background. I’m just painting the silhouettes. You can use a detailed brush or simply a black marker.
Step 9 – Finishing touches

With the black marker, I draw the carapace sections, draw the silhouette of the turtle (you can skip it). I also added more white (you can see in the final picture below) and some black on the bottom of the carapace to create shade.
